Finding the Right Voice Coach

By: Direk Brian Ligsay

You want to learn how to manage your voice skills, but can't decide on which approach or how to start. Here are 5 tips on how to find the right Vocal coach for your needs..

1. Seek Professional Help. Before making a jump to the bandwagon, ask around for the right people who will give you genuine advise. A good vocal coach must have extensive background on his/her field, working tirelessly and setting examples in the same. A wrong coach, may injure your career, give you false hopes and even cost you more than what you bargained for. Don't forget to ask for fees and working hours - a good vocal coach will give you proper estimates, number of hours and schedule promptly. Remember to ask for re-booking charges should you be unavailable to attend a session.

2. Determine your skill set needs. There are a lot of vocal expertise that you can excel on. Whether it be singing, speaking, hosting, live VOs, narrations, advertising, gaming, animation and etc.. You would want to work on your core skills and focus first on your strong points. Do you want to learn how to do voices for advertising?.. then skip vocal coaching for theater (as this may prove less helpful and disastrous). Aiming for a better pitch? then voice overs for narration is not for you.. You get the idea. Find your strength by booking a screening test/mock auditions with a Voice coach (which will cost you), and be ready to be fed by pro-active comments (some of which may be too hard to swallow).

3. Invest on the Right Training. You know what they say - "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance."  The right productivity tools should include a proper course layout, objectives and exercises geared toward calculable results. If your training is getting you nowhere or will leave you feeling empty afterwards, you either: a. Find a better Coach or b. Just give up on your dreams (pun intended). Find a training session you are comfortable with, but will still challenge you to meet your needs. Remember, only you can determine your level of success..

4. Learn how to accept failures. Disappointments will always be a part of your career. Whether you are a budding actor, or a rising speaker. It pays to learn how to handle turn downs, especially in a field where you will be doing more auditions than actual recordings. Learn from your mistakes, by having your performances analyzed. Breath, relax and be eager to look forward to the next auditions. Never expect to land the job, until you have signed the contract. And when you do, read and ask.

5. Marketing your skills. A good vocal coach can do wonders for your career, direct you on the right path, give you recommendations, and present a business strategy to progress your skills. It may be a rough road ahead, but when you have a good vehicle, a well maintained engine and is creatively fueled - you'll be driving like a pro in no time. If you are investing on yourself, then you should also learn about returns. There is no one better than you, than a better version of you. So when you are ready.. deduce, bargain and perform.. and course get paid.
